South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) Bursary: Empowering Northern Cape Students

About The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO):
Founded in 1820, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) stands as the country’s leading astronomy research institute. Home to the Southern African Large Telescope, the SAAO conducts fundamental research in astrophysics and astronomy, providing a world-class research facility. Operated under the South African Department of Science and Innovation, the SAAO publishes discoveries, engages in outreach activities, and contributes to the advancement of astronomy in southern Africa.

SAAO Bursary Programme:
In celebration of its 200th anniversary, the SAAO is offering bursary support to 10 deserving students in the Northern Cape. Each beneficiary will receive R20,000 to cover various educational expenses, including textbooks, transportation, food, and educational equipment.

Bursary Requirements And Eligibility:
Eligible candidates must be Northern Cape students in their 1st or 2nd year of qualification in the following disciplines:

  • Mathematics
  • Tourism
  • Science
  • Science Education
  • Engineering
    Additionally, household income must not exceed R600,000.

How To Apply And Application Details:
Interested applicants must prepare the following support documents:

  • Application letter indicating field of study, household income, and motivation
  • For 1st-year students: Proof of admission at a South African university and a photocopy of the matric certificate
  • For 2nd-year students: Results from 1st year of studies
